Before & After: Fairy Composite

This past weekend I tried my hand at some photo manipulation and compositing using my niece as a model.

Family is of the highest importance to both myself and my husband. Every Sunday, he has dinner with his parents and his sister and her family. I started joining them off and on while dating, and now it’s a full on tradition for me too. Every Sunday, we get together and share a meal. It’s a blessing to be able to do that, and to have family who actually want to spend time together. Sadly, my parents are too far away for us to do something with them on a weekly basis. We try to see them every 5 or 6 weeks or so.

Last weekend it was so nice out and I had just read an article featuring some jaw-dropping examples of photo manipulation / compositing. I couldn’t get the urge to do some myself out of my head. So I brought my camera with to dinner and figured I would try to get some pictures of our niece to photoshop.

She wanted me to come sit with her all the way in the backyard, so we sat in the grass and ate our suckers (I bought them on the way to dinner).  I tried explaining what I wanted to do with the photos of her, and she seemed excited about it.

We took some where she was holding out her hand and where she had her hands cupped together. The pose I ended up using, however, was an unplanned pose.

I knew that I wanted to go girly and make her a fairy for the first photo manipulation. When I was teaching myself graphic design back in my childhood, I actually STARTED OUT doing photo manipulations, so this felt like familiar territory to me.

You may notice that the end result has a slight “blurred” or “smudged” look to it. I knew from the beginning that I wanted this to end up looking like a digital painting. That is why things like her hair or eyes look they way they do.

If you are interested in seeing more photo manipulation work, head over to my portfolio or check out more blog posts.

Xoxo
